Crumbs & Whiskers's cat-less Kickstarter party appears to have paid off. In an effort to open what would be D.C.'s first cat cafe, Kanchan Singh turned to Kickstarter to raise funds for building out the Crumbs & Whiskers decor and space. And the people have spoken: Crumbs & Whiskers has already raised over $12,000.
UPDATE: As of 3 p.m. today, the cat cafe has reached its funding goal, and the numbers continue to grow.
That means Singh is well on her way to enough funding to buy two "awesome cat towers" and a cat barrier/double door system, according to the Kickstarter. If the Kickstarter goes over her goal of $15,000, she's set up a wishlist of items like "super comfy floor seating," and something called a cat wheel.
The Kickstarter also sheds some light on both Crumbs & Whiskers origin story — according to the video, a quarterlife crisis led Singh to Thailand, where she stumbled upon a cat cafe — and how Crumbs & Whiskers will work. There will be an hourly reservation system and an hourly cover charge.
Want to pledge? There are plenty of options. Pledges of $5 get high-res cat photos, $25 gets a poster, postcards and the name of someone you don't like in a litterbox at Crumbs & Whiskers, or splash out at $1,000 and up for a private Crumbs & Whiskers party.
