Takoma Park, the oysters are here. Jeff Black's Republic restaurant opened over the weekend for dinner, with a menu from chef Danny Wells.
Wells, Black and Molly Allen of Atreus Works scoured several stores to find vintage and reclaimed furniture and accessories for the restaurant. Unique touches include lighting fixtures made out of jet engines, doors from Buenos Aires, 1960s wallpaper from Paris and refurbished sofas. Another touch outside is the Video Americain sign (a reminder of one of Takoma Park's beloved shops). There's a patio with room for 30, where they plan to host live music.
Brett Robison is leading the bar program, which features local beers, classic cocktails and an in-house barista for coffee. The restaurant has local oysters and dishes like Portuguese seafood stew, mussels, beluga lentils with tomato cream and cauliflower, vegetable sides and more.
