K STREET—Robert Wiedmaier announced today that John Engle will take over as chef de cuisine at Brasserie Beck. The Washington native has worked in two of Wiedmaier's other kitchens — Marcel's and, most recently, Mussel Bar — over the last two and a half years, so odds are good for a seamless transition. CLEVELAND PARK—Speaking of Brasserie Beck, David Ashwell and John Warner (former executive chef and former manager, respectively) have announced plans to open a French bistro in the old Sushi Sushi space in Cleveland Park. Le Zinc will serve classics from bouillabaisse and choucroute to regional fare like Maryland rockfish. Expect a soft opening in April. [Metrocurean]
U STREET—Construction has started again on the 14th Street taqueria from the owners behind Masa 14. The project got started last summer with a plan to open in November, so it's already way behind, but here's hoping it won't be too much longer. [U Street Girl]
PENN QUARTER—Take a look at a draft menu for Mike Isabella's Graffiato, which the chef kindly shared with the Post's Tim Carman. The Top Cheftestant says that while his menu is Italian-inspired, he's also seeking to include the Latin and Middle Eastern influences gleaned from previous posts in Atlanta and at Zaytinya. But his Dirty Jerz roots come through, too, in a fried calamari-topped pizza pie he calls the Jersey Shore. Paging Snooki. [WaPo]
