White House chef Cristeta Comerford had a little bit of help last night in preparing the meal for the 2011 Governor's Dinner — students from Harriet Tubman Elementary School pitched in on the prep work. The kids helped harvest spinach and other greens from the White House vegetable garden. They also worked with pastry chef Bill Yosses on the dessert side, which included a coconut sorbet in a chocolate shell accompanied by poached tropical fruits.
Comerford, Yosses and Sam Kass adopted Tubman Elementary as part of First Lady Michelle Obama's Chefs Move To Schools initiative last year. While this isn't the first time these lucky kids have been invited to harvest the White House garden, this is the first time the Governor's Dinner has hosted underage guest chefs, according to Obama Foodorama. Past guest chefs? Oh, just the likes of Marcus Samuelsson and Rick Bayless.
