Just in time for March Madness, a new sports bar has opened today on U Street in the old Momo space. According to manager Karim Soumah, Touchdown aims to build a strong sense of community both inside the sports realm and beyond. The bar is already an official sponsor of DC United, so expect them to raffle off season tickets to patrons throughout the soccer season. But Touchdown is also interested in being as affordable and approachable as possible to the community at large, whether that means importing regional specialty drinks or lowering the price point. "Whatever we can do to bring your hometown experience to DC, we'll do," Soumah says.
And this is a sports bar with an art director. Slick historic photographs of the 1924 Washington Senators line the walls of this two-story bar. The photo gallery will rotate every three months or so. Touchdown is also outfitted with 15 flat-screen TVs (with more on the way) and they're planning a Duke Ellington mural across from the second-floor bar to honor the community.
Touchdown sports your typical bar food menu with grand slam nachos, burgers and wings, but it also throws a few curve balls. Goat cheese quesadilla or peanut butter mac-n-cheese anyone? But this is a bar first, and a long list of bottles, cans and drafts includes some gems like Pork Slap and Troegs Hopback Amber. The happy hour here is 25 percent of rail drinks, drafts and appetizers, with additional specials on rotating days.
