BALLSTON—Just a little heads up to whet your appetites through the weekend, Ballston: Buzz Bakery will officially open its second location on Monday. And pastry chef Tiffany MacIsaac has clearly been hard at work coming up with a whole host of expanded offerings to set the Ballston outpost apart from the original Alexandria spot. Think bacon-toffee waffles, sour cherry cheesecake whole wheat homemade Pop-Tarts and brown sugar-oatmeal ice cream. (Yes. That is fact.) They'll have free samples on opening day, including coffee tastings. Plan accordingly. [EaterWire]
CHEVY CHASE—Speaking of ice cream, Gifford's is celebrating its grand re-opening in Chevy Chase tomorrow by giving away free vanilla cones to the first 500 customers. The ice cream shop had closed for about nine months due to franchisee mismanagement, but is now back in business with the help of strategic partner ACKC Cocoa Bar. Huzzah! [EaterWire]
EVENT PLANNING—There's all kinds of other free food available tomorrow, too, thanks to the annual European Union Open House Day. The 27 EU member embassies will be opening up their doors for your cultural enrichment and stuff, but we won't blame you if you're just planning to hit up the German embassy's beer garden.
