The Post takes a retrospective look at sidewalk cafes as the 50th anniversary of their existence in DC approaches. Apparently it was quite the fight back in the 60s to get approval for alfresco dining. Among the arguments against that then-Deputy Police Chief Howard V. Covell cited was that "this type of operation would provide a favorable setting for ladies of easy virtue as they ply their trade up and down the street." [WaPo]
