Wagamama Finally Nixes D.C. Plans After Three Years

Missy Frederick is the Cities Director for Eater.

After toying with the D.C. market since they signed a lease for Penn Quarter all the way back in 2009, Wagamama reps today finally confirmed what we've suspected all along. The noodle shop will not be opening at 418 7th St. NW. The news come from spokeswoman Ingrid Williamson, whom Eater reached via email.

Wagamama's board, today confirms that Wagamama will not be opening a
restaurant in Washington D.C. as originally planned
. Wagamama remains committed to building the brand and restaurant expansion in the U.S.A. We currently operate three restaurants in Boston, Massachusetts and will continue to expand from this base.

Wagamama signed a lease for the former Olsson's Books space in 2009, predicting a 2010 opening. The project experienced several delays, but reps said as recently as this year that the noodle shop would look to open in 2012. Looks like D.C. will have to stay satisfied with all the noodle concepts that have opened since Wagamama's announcement, from Toki Underground to Ren's, at least for now.
