On Saturday night, Bourbon Steak joined the roster of DC restaurants that have hosted Barack and Michelle Obama on one of their date nights — this one in particular being the celebration of the President and First Lady's 20th wedding anniversary. While the restaurant is officially keeping quiet about the details of the visit, chef Adam Sobel did acknowledge the visit, tweeting a picture of the presidential M&Ms he got and writing: "Today was epic! We were able to host dinner for Mr. President and Mrs. Obama. Another dream come true!"
A source tells Eater that Sobel had created a special tasting menu for the anniversary dinner that the Obamas declined, opting instead to order a la carte. Nobody's giving details on what they ordered, but Obama Foodorama has a picture of Sobel's tasting menu that he had tweeted and then deleted featuring dishes such as an heirloom sweet potato soup with seared foie gras and crispy chicken skins.
So while no one at the restaurant is talking about the dinner, who is revealing some intel? Well, President Obama. According to Obama Foodorama, the President talked about the dinner at a campaign fundraiser last night — yes, they ate in a private dining room "because people kind of lean over and start listening if we're in the booth next to them. And Secret Service gets nervous." Obama also told the crowd that at the end of the meal, the "wonderful young" and unidentified server informed the President that the Affordable Care Act had saved his mother's life.
Last year, the Obamas celebrated their anniversary at Restaurant Eve and have previously celebrated at Blue Duck Tavern as well. Further, it's worth noting that Saturday was not their actual anniversary — that date was last Wednesday and President Obama spent it debating Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
