They said they would set an opening date this week, and here it is: the new concept from the Taylor Gourmet team, Taylor Charles Steak & Ice, is opening its doors on H Street NE Dec. 12.
The restaurant's mission is to make authentic, Philly-style cheesesteaks, and the feel of the interior is designed to give the impression of an outdoor, walk-up cheesesteak stand from Philly (except you won't have to wait in the cold to get one here). The floors resemble asphalt (complete with manhole covers), and other design details will include street lights and large picnic tables, according to Taylor's Doug Rashid. The restaurant will operate from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and until 3:30 a.m. on weekends, so late night cheesesteaks will be an option.
The menu includes traditional and speciality cheesesteaks, plus some other options like a "sexy" Sloppy Joe and an eggplant sandwich. Water ice flavors will rotate, but they'll always have lemon, and other desserts include custard, gelati and ice cream sandwiches.
