Spike Mendelsohn may be in the midst of expanding Good Stuff Eatery out to Crystal City and Georgetown, but he and his team are already tinkering with the idea of a new concept. Yesterday evening, the City Paper somehow intercepted a letter from Micheline Mendelsohn — sister and publicist to Spike Mendelsohn — to none other than First Lady Michelle Obama revealing some big plans: "...because we're not busy enough, Spike and I are taking over a space next door to We, The Pizza and opening a steak-frites concept. This summer you'll be able to enjoy some authentic french food on Capitol Hill..."
A steak-frites concept opening this summer next to We, The Pizza? Well, not quite. Micheline Mendelsohn tells Eater this morning that the intercepted letter is a little bit dated — there's definitely nothing opening this summer and the team isn't even in talks with the space next door, which is currently a dry cleaner: "There's no lease, there's no location and it's a concept right now."
What is happening? Well, the idea definitely exists for a bistro that would capitalize on Spike Mendelsohn's French training — and, as Micheline emphasizes, it will not be a fast-casual spot like his other restaurants. And they are indeed moving on it, currently in talks with a space down the block as well as one in Georgetown near still-undisclosed location of the soon-to-be Good Stuff Eatery out there. So stay tuned.
