Yes, Standard Is Finally Reopening This Evening

The barbecue gods must be shining upon DC because tonight's balmy weather is divine for the reopening and first-year anniversary of the popular 14th Street beer garden Standard. Eater stopped by this afternoon to see what's in store for opening day and briefly chat with chef/owner Tad Curtz.

"I've been looking forward to this for months," said Curtz. "The smoker is packed with food. I'm really excited about the weather." Several stacks of Hofbrau kegs were also by the bar. Curtz said there were 50 kegs altogether, including the ones upstairs, so "we should be set for tonight."

Curtz also admitted that as March 1 drew close he would often wake up late in the evening, thinking it was re-opening night in a few hours and he had forgotten to prepare the food. "It's been a recurring nightmare," he said. With the looks of things, though, Standard's crew is ready to take down the "reopening March 1" sign and open the gates for another season tonight at 5 p.m.
