Bar Pilar has been a neighborhood favorite for a long time and regulars were left fairly distraught by its November shutter and slowly dribbled reopening — first drinks only downstairs back in February, until they finally unveiled the second floor expansion and new menu in late March. Within days of being back in service, the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington announced that Bar Pilar has been nominated for Casual Restaurant of the Year. But what do the other early diners think?
The Incredibly Packed News: Unsurprisingly, one Yelper finds Bar Pilar as popular as ever: "Upstairs bar service is wonderful. Downstairs, not so great. Could wait a long time. Also forget about walking in for dinner upstairs as you could wait up to an hour." [Yelp]
The Good Design News: Another Yelper really digs the restaurant's new look: "We were seated in the newly renovated upstairs area, which they've done a good job on the decor. I like the exposed brick and ductwork and artwork they have painted on the brick." [Yelp]
The Great News: Metrocurean's Amanda McClements takes to Twitter to praise the new/old menu: "Bravo to @barpilar on 2nd floor expansion. Familiar vibe in tact, food as good as ever. Crispy pig ears, fried chicken, clams, rockfish." And then she does it again: "The bacon buddy sandwich @barpilar. Yeah, more of that please." [Twitter]
The Good Prince of Petworth News: Dan Silverman declares that the place "looks awesome" and a commenter raves, "I had brunch there yesterday and it really is amazing! Such great work! Kudos to the whole Pilar team!" [PoP]
The Bad Prince of Petworth News: A commenter who goes by Hater writes: "No bueno. Ruined the intimate feel of the place. I’m not against expansions, but the new first floor bathroom area is a complete waste of space and it destroys the previous hazy/warm vibe." [PoP]
The Good Foursquare News: There aren't too many new tips on Foursquare since the reopening, but the new ones that are there are full of praise for old favorite dishes like The Hangover and strongly urge consumption of the Ruffled Shirt cocktail. [Foursquare]
