Welcome to a very special Pizza Week edition of Dining Confidential. The DC area is home to a lot of pizzerias, and among them are hidden gems that many Washingtonians aren't unearthing. To help guide us to these potential discoveries, we've enlisted some of our city's many food players to share with us their under-the-radar recommendations. We'll be sharing these throughout the week — and are still accepting recommendations.
Returning for a second go at Dining Confidential — he previously recommended Bold Bite — PS 7's Peter Smith picks Haven Pizzeria for his go-to pizza, yet another Bethesda spot. While he admits the pizzas might not look pretty, what really matters is the taste:
"It's brand new and has of those great authentic coal burning ovens custom built by a true Italian. As soon as you walk in, you get a funky taste in your mouth but then realize it’s the real coal that cooks the pizza. One of these ovens takes about 2 weeks to heat up (and 3 to cool down,) with it Haven produces these un-perfect looking — but perfect tasting — pizzas on a sheet pan dropped on your table. This place is great because its not foo-foo, you simply order a tomato pie, or if you want cheese, a tomato pie with cheese. They also make a house made gelato which is ridiculous."
