Here is a pretty amazing thing quite possibly CONFIRMED waiting in the future: an entire restaurant pairing fried chicken and doughnuts from the folks behind Birch & Barley. Earlier this morning, Food & Wine editor Dana Cowin tweeted: "Are fried chicken and donuts the new peanut butter & jelly? @federaldonuts pairs them and a new DC resto from Birch & Barley team will too!" — which, more importantly, was later retweeted by Birch & Barley pastry chef Tiffany MacIsaac.
No one at the Neighborhood Restaurant Group has responded to requests for comment, but a source tells Eater that this thing is real and it's happening. Which, frankly, is not too surprising considering that the Logan Circle restaurant recently debuted a weekly fried chicken and doughnuts dinner on Wednesday evenings. The Neighborhood Restaurant Group also recently confirmed it's taking over the Yola space in Dupont Circle — might that be the home to this potential new concept? Stay tuned.
UPDATE: A rep for the Neighborhood Restaurant Group confirms to Eater that, yes, they are indeed opening a fried chicken and doughnuts restaurant in the former Yola space. There's no name for the restaurant yet, but she notes that it will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a Greg Engert-curated list of beer on tap and a focus on spirits. They're shooting for a mid-to-late November opening.
