Edgar Bar & Kitchen opened quietly over the holidays in late December. The restaurant replaces the Mayflower Hotel's beloved and historic Town & Country bar. The place emphasizes cocktails, happy hours and shareable plates rather than high-end fare and formal dining. There isn't a ton of chatter online about Edgar yet, but here's what the very first Yelpers, Tweeters and bloggers had to say about the place.
The Get The Meatballs News: Says Capital Cooking's Lauren DeSantis: "Please be sure to order the Homemade Meatballs, because they are the most tender, delicate meatballs you may ever eat." [CC]
The Masculine Power Lunch News: UrbanDaddy offers some power lunching advice for those who hit up Edgar. "For a business lunch with a couple G-men, you'll want to book one of the circular leather power booths or the blond wood table ringed with antique whiskey bottles, and tuck into crab cake BLTs or beer-steamed mussels." [UD]
The Twitter Buzz: There's some early Twitter enthusiasm for Edgar's offerings. "Nice venue!", says @legalspeaks. The place has a "fantastic craft #cocktail list & small plates of classic comfort foods," says @laurachanning. And from the @fooDCraveblog: "Drinks and apps at @edgardc last night. What a #DC power scene!" [Twitter]
The Facebook Endorsement: From Bill Dowson on the restaurant's Facebook page. "What a COOL new DC restaurant.". [Facebook]
The Incorrect Glass Selection News: Edgar has 3 stars on Yelp right now, with 7 reviews in. Alison M. isn't too hot on the place. "Was a big fan of the Town & Country, the old bar in the Mayflower. Sorry to say this is a poor replacement. Was served a gin Martini in a coupe - missed the traditional glass! Soggy potato chips and a clueless, hard to find, bartender. Tourists in sweatpants and young kids - yikes." [Yelp]
The Classy Cocktails News: Yelp user Tiffany D. is high on Edgar's drinks. "Really high-end drinks here, made by one of those expert type bartenders that probably has a PhD in bartending from Harvard or something. Definitely a great after work happy-hour place. [Yelp]
The Stellar Specials News: Yelp user Amelia S. singles out Edgar's various theme nights, including free flatbread on Fridays, free champagne for ladies on Thursdays and discounted Johnny Walker Blue on Mondays. "You say free bubbles and I am totally there," she says. [Yelp]
