The DC area is home to a lot of restaurants, and among them are hidden gems that many Washingtonians aren't unearthing. To help guide us to these potential discoveries, we've enlisted some of our city's many food players to share with us their under-the-radar recommendations for Dining Confidential. For this week's edition of Dining Confidential, we checked in with Johnny Spero. The chef has been busy heading up his buzzy new restaurant in Capitol Hill, Suna, but he still finds time to grab a quick bite elsewhere. Spero shared his recommendations for cheap tacos and the lesser-known Japanese dishes at Honey Pig.
"I like Super Tacos in Adams Morgan for carnitas or al pastor tacos. All of their tortas are delicious as well."
"It seems pretty common amongst industry people to flock to Honey Pig in Annandale for spicy pork belly, but they also opened up an izakaya. I love Japanese food. I traveled to Tokyo last year and had several helpings of takoyaki [octopus balls] and okonomiyaki [a savory pancake], and they have both on the menu so I was very excited about that. They also have wasabi tako, which is just raw octopus marinated in wasabi and roughly chopped. I love the texture and the slight heat from the wasabi, but balanced with a little bit of acid."
