Missy Frederick is the Cities Director for Eater.

Tom Sietsema's Fall Dining Guide is out and here are the early takeaways. The theme is "40 favorites," and only 15 restaurants from last year appear in the 2013 guide, a testament to all the promising new restaurants that have opened this year.

The new guide is more D.C. focused (versus the suburbs) and is quite 14th Street-centric. Some of the new and newish restaurants highlighted: Ambar (2 stars), Barmini (3 stars), Casa Luca (2.5 stars), Daikaya (2.5 stars), Del Campo (2.5 stars), DGS Delicatessen (2.5 stars), Doi Moi (2.5 stars), Etto (3 Stars), GBD (2 stars), Ghibellina (2.5 stars), Kapnos (2.5 stars), Le Diplomate (3 Stars), Range (2.5 stars), and Red Hen (2.5 stars).

Four star ratings were reserved for CityZen, Rasika, the Inn at Little Washington and Komi (the same restaurants earned that honor last round). Some notable omissions: Restaurant Eve (which is undergoing major changes), The Source, and Central.
