December 7: That's when Dolcezza plans to open its gelato factory, tasting room and coffee lab near Union Market in Northeast D.C.. A grand opening event is being planned with coffee and gelato tastings from 2-6 p.m. that day.
This is Dolcezza's large scale facility, spanning 4,000 square feet in a warehouse atmosphere. Customers will be able to look in on the gelato-making process and taste some samples in the process when they're there. The gelato won't be tempered (it has to be normally to be served in cups or cones) so it'll taste particularly fresh at the laboratory (more of a soft serve texture). Some upcoming flavors planned include Crookneck pumpkin, maple syrup and sweet potato pecan praline. Brian Miller of Edit Lab at Streetsense designed the space, which will have big skylights, 18 foot glass garage doors and an industrial feel (there are even furniture pieces from the Hershey Chocolate Factory circa 1950).
Dolcezza is working with Stumptown Coffee Roasters on its coffee lab. The facility will have room to host special events for 50-100 people.
