Derek Brown's trio of Shaw bars on 7th Street will be complete come Saturday. That's when Southern Efficiency, his ode to American whiskey, will open at 1841 7th St. NW on Saturday, joining the sherry-focused Mockingbird Hill and beer and oyster haunt, Eat the Rich.
Bartender J.P. Fetherston has a near encyclopedic knowledge of Southern Whiskey, and is happy to educate those less familiar with the product on the various boutique brands he's assembled for Southern Efficiency's bar. There are also beers, southern ciders and bourbon-spiked classic cocktails.
Rounding out the offerings are Southern bites like a roe-spiked deviled egg or a boozy bourbon ball for dessert, courtesy of chef Julien Shapiro. The place has a natural, wood-heavy design with about two dozen seats. Status: Opening this weekend. 1841 7th St. NW; website.
