Congratulations are in order for Johnny Monis. The chef of Little Serow and Komi received his first James Beard award last night. Monis beat out such other local chefs as Cathal Armstrong, Spike Gjerde and Vikram Sunderam, not to mention Philadelphia's Brad Spence, for the honor. Monis has been nominated for a James Beard award before.
It was a big year for Monis. His tribute to regional Thai cooking, Little Serow, has been open for about a year and a half now, and has drawn critical praise and national attention, including the top of GQ's Most Outstanding Restaurants of 2013 list. He was also Eater DC's Chef of the Year.
Monis was the only D.C. chef/restaurant to take home an honor last night in New York, though CityZen had been nominated for Best Wine Program. Eater National live-blogged the event, and has a full list of winners, including Stephanie Izard for Best Chef Great Lakes and Blue Hill for Outstanding Restaurant.
