U Street's &pizza Opening Wednesday; Another to Come

Missy Frederick is the Cities Director for Eater.

&pizza, the spinoff location from H &pizza owner Steve Salis, will open its doors Wednesday at 1250 U St. NW. And it's a good thing they lost the "H" — another location of the chain is already on tap for Brookland.

"We've learned a lot from our first unit," said Salis. The U Street location will have the same assembly-line set-up as the original, but the service line is larger in size to handle additional demand. "Our whole M.O. is to build our own take on the local, modern, mom and pop pizzeria," said Salis. U Street's rich jazz history is incorporated into the restaurant's decor, he said. The location will open up at 11 a.m. Wednesday, and the restaurant is holding a pizza box design competition to kick off the opening.

Meanwhile, another &pizza will open at the Monroe Street Market development in Northeast D.C. &pizza is the first retail tenant to sign a lease there. "There's definitely something we find to be intriguing about Brookland," he said. "We're fortunate they asked us to be there, and hopefully we'll be one of the reasons others will come [to the development]. I think every neighborhood needs a local pizza shop." Which means this likely won't be the last location for them; Salis said they're focused on the next two locations, but are always open to other opportunities.
