Butterflies everywhere, a not-really-dressed female figure on the wall — those are some of the visual highlights from Oyamel's recent expansion. The changes bring an additional 42 seats to José Andrés' Penn Quarter Mexican restaurant.
Architecture firm HapstakDemetriou+ was in charge of the renovations, which add a new bar and a private dining area. The special chairs for the restaurant were designed by Philippe Starck, and other artists such as Amtrend and Avery Studio contributed to the new look. Butterflies are suspended from the ceiling, and there are new chandeliers and banguettes as well. The mural from General Design Co. features local model Julie Zeger with butterflies in her hair. Update: Oyamel now plans to reopens to the public Friday.
