D.C. may see its first cakepoppery soon. Yael Krigman reached beyond her funding goal to bring in $74,341 on Kickstarter to launch Baked by Yael, a bakery devoted to the bite-sized treats, cake pops.

Her next stop is to find the right location for her storefront. "As soon as I find it, I will be eager to move forward with the build-out to get DC's first cakepoppery up and running as quickly as possible," Krigman told Eater. She's focusing on spots in Upper Northwest but open to other options.

Meanwhile another start-up dessert venture, Thunder Pig Confectionery, is wrapping up a Kiva campaign. Meg Murray's candy and cookie venture, a product of the Start-Up Kitchen program, has raised 91 percent of her $5,000 goal. Her goal is to use the money for a storefront, too.
