Brookland, you're getting another bar.
A bar and restaurant, to be precise, from the Meridian Pint and Smoke & Barrel team. Developer The Bozzuto Group sent out a press release today announcing a new restaurant for the Monroe Street Market development near the metro.
Update: Owner John Andrade describes the restaurant as "more in line with Meridian Pint than Smoke & Barrel." Expect a similar menu and look to the Columbia Heights restaurant, but not an identical copy. Chef David Shewmaker will create a menu with a nice variety of burgers, along with appetizers, entrees and salads. "I'll give him free rein," he said. There will be vegetarian and vegan options as well. American craft beer will remain a focus, but the restaurant will also expand its wine and cocktail offerings.
There's no name yet for the restaurant (Andrade says he's currently debating between about five options). It will open in mid-2014, ideally early summer, at the end of the project's Art Walk. Early design details include exposed brick, a partially open kitchen, booth seating and subtle colors. There will be a patio, and lunch, brunch and dinner service.
Andrade says he'd been hoping to open another place for several years now, and checked out options everywhere from Navy Yard to Bethesda before settling on Brookland. "I really enjoy going into up and coming neighborhoods — that's not to say Brookland isn't an established neighborhood, but it's been starved in the way of hospitality and restaurants." Brookland will continue to see residential development over the next few years. "The location just makes perfect sense."
