Welcome back to the photo series Eater Scenes, where Eater photographer Rey Lopez captures restaurants in action at a certain, and very specific, point in the day. Here, Lopez visits The Pestaurant, the pop-up insect restaurant at The Occidental Wednesday afternoon.
Grasshopper burgers, Mexican-spiced mealworms, scorpion lollipops and more were all on the menu at The Pestaurant. This one day event, sponsored by pest control company Ehrlich, is being held at various locations across the world, including right here in D.C. at The Occidental. The event was meant to draw attention to insects as a legitimate food and protein source, and drew participants eager to eat adventurously, Instagram their bravery and even participate in a cricket-eating contest. Here's the scene, including Occidental chef Rodney Scruggs putting his own spin on a grasshopper burger.
