Chef Spike Mendelsohn and new business partner Vinoda Basnayake just opened the doors to their Dupont speakeasy, The Sheppard, but they're already getting ready to collaborate on another venture. Tired of the usual D.C. parties, catered with "hummus and boring roast beef sandwiches" that no one touches, Basnayake says, the pair is taking matters into their own hands and launching Spike Events.
Also a lobbyist, Basnayake thought there was room in the local market for a company that can bring something unexpected to the DC's usual networking events, as he put it. "Spike is super creative, and we just thought there was a gap in the market for a cool, creative company. We're launching Spike Events to fill that gap."
Details are pretty limited at this point, and there's no official launch date or website for the venture. But the partners started trying things out and putting a team together during their Fourth of July party at Capitol Skyline Pool. Also on the roster: a carnival-themed fete at Merriweather Post Pavilion, and a big Halloween bash for a private client. They'll target all types of clients, from individuals to corporate events, and hope to plan something during the White House Correspondents Dinner in the spring. "We're not putting any barriers on what Spike Events will be doing," said Mendelsohn.
