Is a New App Allowing Customers to Skip Long Waits?

A new, mysterious app called Usher appears to be in a testing phase in D.C.

An Eater reader sent this note to the tipline over the weekend:

I was out last night on 14th st. and watched someone use an app to walk into the restaurant without a reservation and without being on the waitlist (which was 2 hours long). The hostess said the app is called Usher, and after some prying, she told me the website...Looks like it's focused on DC establishments, but I honestly haven't been able to find much. Everyone in line was pretty interested/perplexed.

A website bearing the name Usher does appear to exist, as does a Facebook page for the app. Attempting to sign up, though, results in this message, "Unfortunately, Usher has reached capacity for its stealth version. We'll be sure to notify you once the beta version of Usher is available."

Update: Representatives from Usher sent along this statement: "We are currently engaged in a number of agreements which, unfortunately, prohibit us from commenting on the content, function, and partners of Usher. We appreciate the immense support of those who have shown interest in Usher. We'll be updating the community soon."
