The New Bastille in Alexandria is a Charming Ode to Paris

Chefs Christophe and Michelle Poteaux's contemporary French restaurant opens in a larger space.

After eight years on North Royal St., Alexandria's Bastille opens today in a new, larger space on North Fayette St. The revamped 140-seat Bastille now includes two dining rooms with private dining space and a large courtyard patio. A serene color palette of cool greens and blue is accented by dark wood tones and charming black and white photography.

Chef Dawn Burkart is joining Bastille as chef de cuisine, and the new space includes an upgraded kitchen. The opening menu will feature inspiration from North Africa and the Middle East as well as contemporary France, with dishes like paella a la plancha and Maine lobster braised in coconut curry broth. In addition to Bastille's dessert selection, the restaurant will also offer made-to-order cakes for special occasions.

Bastille is open for dinner service to start, and will add lunch, brunch and all-day café service in the coming weeks. Status: Soft opening today; 606 North Fayette Street; (703) 519-3776; website.
