UPDATE, December 2015: They're now officially taking orders for delivery.
Does a kitten-gram sound too good to be true? D.C.'s cat cafe plans to make it a reality this holiday season.
Crumbs & Whiskers plans to offer delivery of baskets of macarons — and kittens — for the holidays. Here's how it works:
Around ten customers will get the chance to order a basket for delivery on December 20 (they're sticking to homes in the Georgetown neighborhood for the launch). Those who order the service will pay $99 for the macarons and somewhere between 3-5 visiting kittens. The cats will play in the person's home for thirty minutes before returning to the cat cafe — though any customers who fall in love with them will have the opportunity to adopt them, founder Kanchan Singh explained. Customers can order the service for themselves or as a gift; 15 percent of proceeds go towards the Humane Society.
The idea came out of interactions with customers at the cat cafe, said Singh. "People would say, 'This is the best day of my life; the only thing that would make it better would be if this was my living room,'" she said.
The idea of delivering kittens comes with logistical challenges, which Crumbs & Whiskers is taking into account. They're planning to bring a playpen to customers' homes so that the kittens won't be running wild, and there's a screening process in place for those who request the service. If all goes well, they're hoping to expand the delivery program on Valentine's Day.
The promotion coincides with the cat cafe's six month anniversary in D.C.
