Opening Report: Red Robin Burger Works, Village Sweet Bakery Open

The second of Red Robin's smaller restaurant, plus a new bakery for Virginia.

1) K STREET: Red Robin Burger Works opens its second D.C. location at 1028 19th St. NW today. The first is in L'Enfant Plaza. "I think you'll see that number grow exponentially in the next couple of months in D.C.," said vice president of operations Rob Geresi. The restaurant has several letter of intents signed in the market, but would not confirm exact locations.

Red Robin Burger Works location are smaller in size (usually around 2,000 square feet on average) and are designed more for the city than the suburbs. There are 10 of the restaurant's best-seller burgers available, plus items like wraps and salads. Service happens in five minutes or less. The menu is about 30 percent of the selection of a traditional Red Robin, and burgers start at $4.95. "We invented the category of the gourmet burger," says Geresi.

The company is focusing its expansion in Chicago, Colorado and D.C., with plans to add a fourth market later this year. Status: Opening today. 1028 19th St. NW; website.

2) ARLINGTON: Arlington has a new bakery in Village Sweet Bakery. Menu items range from Key lime cupcakes to savory scones. Status: Certified open. 5872 Washington Blvd.; website.
