A Silver Spring icon for swordfighters and shanty singers is closing its doors. Piratz Tavern's last day of business will be April 4. Owner Tracy Rebelo posted a message on The Soul of Piratz Tavern Facebook page, saying that the restaurant has lost its lease.
Piratz Tavern opened in 2007, with costumed waiters, strong pitchers of grog and a busy patio. It would host pirate-themed singers and performers like belly dancers and fire baton-twirlers over the years.
It also struggled publicly over the years. In 2012, it appeared on "Bar Rescue," where host Jon Taffer remade it into a place called Corporate Bar, saying he was trying to appeal to young professionals. The staff revolted, resulting in one of the show's more dramatic episodes. Only days later, the restaurant again transformed itself back into Piratz Tavern.
Eater has reached out to the bar for any additional details on the closure.
UPDATE: Piratz Tavern posted some more information on its official Facebook page, saying they actually worked with Jon Taffer again for a re-rescue episode. "They promised that it would be followed by a re-rescue and that they would right all the wrong's committed during the first episode. Obviously I don't learn. I believed them...Basically we have been fucked by reality TV again and with [no]one to blame but ourselves, we have decided not to renew our lease. [sic]"
That episode will air April 5, the day after the closure. Here's a clip from that episode (in the teaser for it, Spike TV says Piratz Tavern asked them to return, which happens in the clip).
