Opening Report: Veloce, Union Kitchen Grocery Both Opening

1) Farragut West: Veloce opens its doors today, serving up fast-casual pizza, sandwiches and salads. The operation is from Ruth Gresser, owner of Pizzeria Paradiso. Diners can choose from several forms of crust, including grain, gluten-free and whole wheat. Plus, there will be breakfast pizzas in the morning. Status: Opening today. 1828 L St. NW; website.

2) Capitol Hill: Union Kitchen branches out with the opening of Union Kitchen Grocery. They'll sell about 100 local products (including several from members of the food incubator) alongside typical grocery items like soda and chips. Beyond its retail offerings, the shop has breakfast and lunch takeaway options such as sandwiches and Compass Coffee. They'll add carry-out dinners later this summer, and start selling beer and wine.
