Finish this sentence: After finishing their downward facing dogs, yogis in the DC area love to wind down by...
c) gulping a pint of beer?
Anyone who guesses "c" has caught onto the fact that several breweries in the area have teamed up with yoga instructors to pair asanas and ales. Capitol City Brewing Co., Hellbender Brewing Co., Old Bust Head Brewery and Port City Brewing Co. all clear their space once or twice a month to make way for dozens of yoga mats. After class, they serve a pint or beer sampler after class as a reward.
Though beer and yoga seem like an unlikely combination, brewery staff say that holding yoga classes attracts folks who might not otherwise step foot in their brewery.
"It helps us to reach out to a crowd that wouldn't have found us in the
first place," says Hellbender Co-owner Patrick Mullane says. The brewery has been offering yoga for three months. They had 20 in their first class and close to 35 — their limit — at the last one. "We used every bit of space."
Holding yoga classes also promotes the tasting rooms as places that build community, says Capitol City Brewing General Manager Al Chadsey. Yoga classes at Capitol City are limited to 25 and have filled up the last two months.
