New York import Proper 21 arrived in D.C. a few weeks ago, serving up modern American dishes with an upscale sports bar vibe.

The 8,000-square-foot space at 1319 F St. NW comes from NIEUW Group, which also owns Manhattan Proper and Proper West in New York. All three carry the same look—think velvet wallpaper, orchids, sleek gray booths, and black-and-white sexy artwork. Dishes include truffled fries and burgers, Chimichurri shrimp, and citrus salmon.

The new 200-seat venue near Metro Center is the brand’s biggest one yet. Executive chef Edward Janda has cooked at Fig & Olive in New York and Los Angeles and Tavern on the Green. The space houses two bars, a private room that can be reserved in the back, and 18 TVs throughout. Read on to hear what customers are saying about Proper 21.

The Deja Vu News: Yelper TJ J. just moved to D.C. from NYC and says, “I couldn't be happier the Proper franchise chose to expand to D.C. with me. Their spots were my go-to to watch sports and have a good time in NYC. I felt right at home tonight at Proper 21.” And Facebooker Thomas Toker experienced “amazing drinks and music. Wouldn't expect anything less from the team who launched the other two Proper venues.” [Yelp, Facebook]

The Upscale Vibe News: Zagat writes, “Much like its NYC-based siblings, this Downtown sports bar boasts an upscale citified vibe...a sleek, dimly lit space with walls of flat-screens and state-of-the-art audio-visuals.” [Zagat]

The TBD News: Yelper Rochelle P. noted that on opening night there was a “limited menu...Service was great, food was good, will return in a few weeks to see if they have knocked out the kinks.” Facebooker Clarisa Jiménez Mayoral thought “service was a little slow.” [Yelp, Facebook]

The Needed News: Yelper Ken S. had a “few beers, a ‘Proper’ cheeseburger loaded with grilled onions and nice hot fries. Lots of big screen TVs to watch sports. A cool new addition to F Street where there are not many choices for a sports bar.” [Yelp]

The Proper News: Yelper Otis D. says, “Proper 21 is just what it says it is—a comfortable and spacious place with good food and a relaxed but slightly upscale atmosphere. It is an excellent place to watch a game, and you could also bring a date or have a business meeting.” [Yelp]

The Bomb.com News: Facebooker May Cohen called the buffalo chicken flatbread “so bomb” and she also “loved the decor, staff was super nice and the DJ on Thursday and Saturday was terrific.” [Facebook]
