D.C. lost at least 132 restaurants in 2016.
That’s up from 2015, when the city lost 104 restaurants, by Eater’s tally. The city stayed on pace in the second half of the year when it came to closures, since about 65 had closed during the first half.
Many longtime institutions were among the casualties, including Georgetown’s Bistro Francais, Southern fine dining restaurant Vidalia, Zebebech, Adams Morgan’s Pasta Mia and Cashion’s Eat Place. There were also some more surprising losses, such as relative newcomers Bistrot Royal, GBD, Mango Tree, and Alphonse’s/Nonna’s Kitchen, critical favorite Crane & Turtle, and the constantly-packed Cafe Asia in Rosslyn.
Eater has been tracking restaurant closures throughout the year. Find a story stream of all closure-related news here. D.C.’s food writers weighed in on the closures they were saddest about here.
An alphabetized list of 2016 shutters is below. Particularly significant closures have been bolded. Know of one that’s missing? Share in the comments. Eater will update this post if any additional closings happen over the weekend during the calendar year.
