At Espita Mezcaleria, Drink Mezcal Surrounded by Street Murals

It's opening Tuesday

Espita Mezcaleria is getting ready to open on March 8 at 1250 9th St., NW.

The restaurant is the creation of master mezcalier Josh Phillips and his wife Kelly. The main dining room boasts murals by Yescka, a renowned Oaxacan street artist. A separate bar area faces 9th Street, and an outdoor patio will open during the warmer months with seating for 44.

Espita will specialize in the cuisine of Southern Mexico, particularly Oaxaca’s seven styles of mole. Also expect tlayudas (large, crunchy tortillas from Oaxaca), along with tacos, sopes, and ceviches. Most importantly, there will be a rotating selection of mezcals representing different agave varietals and styles. Executive chef Alexis Samayoa is a Brooklyn native with experience working at such New York restaurants like WD-50, Txikito, and Empellón Taqueria.
