Take a Look Inside Colada Shop, Virginia's New Cuban Cafe

D.C. will get a location as well

Missy Frederick is the Cities Director for Eater.

The journey is almost over. In about a week's time, the D.C. area will get a taste of Colada Shop, the upcoming Cuban cafe from Barmini veteran Juan Coronado, partner and consultant Daniella Senior, and chef Mario Monte.

Walk inside the first location of the cafe (opening in Sterling in the Cascades Overlook development), and see a splashy Cuba-inspired mural, brightly-colored tiles, and accents of greenery. Windows surround the cafe, which has a walk-up counter meal and a large patio. The restaurant's own blend of coffee from Compass Coffee is proudly on display. The space has seating for about 70 including the outdoor area. The development is home to other restaurants as well, including seafood restaurant Ocean Blue (opening today) and a location of Chuy's.

The first Colada Shop opens August 22. A second location will open in a few months at 1405 T St. NW downtown. Cuban pastries, Cuban-style coffee, sandwiches, and even coffee-spiked cocktails are all highlighted at the cafe. Expect some other Cuban dishes as well, like croquetas and tortilla.
