ADAMS MORGAN—The 10th annual Adams Morgan Apple Festival is scheduled to get underway at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 28. The main event is an apple pie baking contest set to be judged by Duke’s Grocery alum and Lucky Buns founder Alex McCoy, and Sakuramen restaurant owner Jonathan Cho, among others.
CAPITOL HILL—Joselito Casa de Comidas just spiced up its weekday happy hour (4 p.m. to 7 p.m.) with a lineup of $6 snacks and libations. There’s tortilla de patatas, Brussels sprouts, and a rotating “flask of the day” that actually comes in a flask (all food and drink at the bar for happy hour is still 20 percent off).
MT. VERNON TRIANGLE—Calle Cinco, the Spanish tapas pop-up from restaurateur Michael Schlow, is now slated to stay “for the foreseeable future” after a successful debut. A new happy hour menu, available daily from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., includes $5 drinks and a range of cured meats and cheeses for $7 or less. Sangrias and beers drop to just $2 at certain times, and an “in your face porron challenge” rewards anyone able to finish off the gravity-assisted drink sans spilling with a complimentary tapa of the chef’s choosing.
MULTIPLE LOCATIONS—D.C. is one of the best and cheapest places in the U.S. to cultivate a plant-based diet, according to WalletHub. Analysts studied 100 cities, considering the cost of groceries for vegetarians, the share of restaurants serving meatless options, and salad shops per capita. D.C. made it into the top 10, at No. 7, while the top three places to be meat-free are New York City, Portland, Oregon, and Orlando, Florida, finds the survey.
UNION MARKET—Masseria, the Michelin-starred restaurant from expansion-minded chef Nicholas Stefanelli, now has a luxe elixir to toast with: Dom Perignon Rosé 2005. The Italian oasis is the only restaurant in D.C. to serve it by the glass ($98), and that’s sort of a steal; the exclusive sparkler can run up to $200 per glass. One of the first prestige cuvees produced in the early 1920s, the rosé blends some of the top vineyards in Champagne, France.
