Community building
The founders of a wildly popular Asian dining hall in Northern Virginia (4221 John Marr Drive, Annandale) are taking the food fest outside Friday, November 24, and Saturday, November 25, to kick off a new monthly “DMV Night Market.” Organizers have recruited over two dozen food trucks and outside restaurants to feed partygoers (noon to 10 p.m.) alongside built-in Block establishments including Snocream Company and Pokeworks. Update: Night market organizer Ben Ragland says permitting issues have forced him to reschedule the inaugural gathering. It’s now scheduled to take place from noon to 8 p..m., Saturday, December 2, and Sunday, December 3. Check the website or social media for additional information.
Booze news
Advisory Neighborhood Commission members recently endorsed the hours of operation for a penthouse bar in a no-name hotel that may not materialize until 2020. Whoever winds up taking control of the prospective development at 601 K Street NW (there’s no clear owner at the moment) isn’t even expected to begin construction until 2018. But administrators unanimously approved keeping a future top floor bar open until 2 a.m. on weekends. [Popville]
Winter fun
The Watergate’s new rooftop skating rink isn’t the only winter playground in town. The Fairmont hotel is turning its courtyard into a ice rink Friday, November 25 — stocking the open-air space with dangling lights, fire pits, and hot chocolate drinks. The rink ($5 per hour, rentals included) is projected to operate from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 am. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
Expansions
Aspiring local chain Poki District and nationwide beer haven Yard House are both headed to Gaithersburg, Maryland. Both restaurants have staked out spots in Rio Washington Center. [Store Reporter]
