Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler
Republic Kolache and Bayou Bakery founder and N’awlins native David Guas have resurrected their wildly popular King Cake Kolache. The seasonal treat sold like hotcakes last year — Republic Kolache co-founder Chris Svetlik said kolache fans snatched up several thousand of the rainbow-colored confections (think: cream cheese filling with almond icing) in just a few short hours — and the krewe is looking forward to another record-breaking appearance this weekend. Try one ($4 a pop) Saturday or Sunday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at HIll Country Barbecue Market in Penn Quarter; Svetlik strongly suggests pre-ordering to avoid going home empty handed.
Lunch Rush
Bastille co-founders Christophe and Michelle Poteaux have engineered a new lunch menu for folks on the go. The “French Quickie” features fast foods including rock shrimp beignets with spicy guacamole, seasonally inspired flatbreads paired with arugula salad, moules du jour, and creme brulee. Mix and match any two items (select wines and beers are also in the mix) for $15.95.
Fighting the Power
Busboys and Poets is continuing the “love trumps hate” movement by pledging to donate a portion of the proceeds from all sales on Valentine’s Day to MPower Change, an organization involved in advocating for social justice. Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York and a plaintiff in a suit challenging President Donald Trump’s executive order barring majority Muslim immigrants from entering the country, is scheduled to speak at the location at 14th and V St. NW from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
SWAG
California Tortilla February 14 is giving away free cinnamon sugar-dusted tortilla chips (served with Nutella dipping sauce) with any purchase. The complimentary “Love Chips” are up for grabs “while supplies last.”
