Free State Atlantic Bar anchored down in D.C. in January, serving up booze, brews, and bites sourced from Mid-Atlantic states.
From the team behind Lost & Found, the nautical-themed bar sits sits below deck of Bantam King.
Co-owner Brian Leonard grew up in Northern Maryland and is a Mid-Atlantic fanatic, so bottled and draught beers and spirits all hail from Asheville, N.C. to Ocean City.
There’s also happy hour, which is ideal for pre-gaming before heading over to the neighboring Verizon Center. The 1,700-square-foot space doesn’t have a kitchen, but there are commercial snacks ($2-$8) such as Jerkface beef jerky and Dolle’s salt water taffy. Cocktails ($10-$12) include Jack’s Orange Crush, a popular summertime drink thrown back at Dewey Beach.
Read on to hear what the public is saying, just two months into opening:
The Hidden Gem News: Facebooker Nakeesha J Ceran says, “The atmosphere is low key and classy. Definitely a hidden gem in D.C. The staff is really awesome and knowledgeable about their products, makes great recommendations as well. (Brian was awesome).” [Facebook]
The East Coast Shout-Out News: Facebooker Cameron Lide says, “With a wide selection of beers, wines & liquor from up and down the Eastern seaboard, you are sure to find something good to drink ... oh & the orange crushes are very refreshing!” Ceran adds “if you are into local the wide selection is just really great.” [Facebook]
The Booze News: Facebooker Matt Chinn says, “One of the coolest secret spots I've seen for microbrew. It's like drinking at the bottom of an old English ship bound for ... well ... another round! Facebooker Rachel Hurley Levitin says, “The Orange Crush is ON POINT! Nice chill bar tucked away, great neighborhood spot.” [Facebook]
The Hungry But Happy News: Yelper Vincent M. says, “The only reason I didn't go flat out five stars is because of the lack of sustenance to go along with the fine drinks ... the only food to eat are potato chips, cookies etc.-packaged food. The staff are all very chill and friendly and the vibe in this tiny tucked away nook of tranquility is very positive. Strongly endorse a visit.” [Yelp]
The Easy Drinking News: Yelper Ramon F. says, “The bartender welcomed me in at 1:20 a.m. for last call and recommended me a smooth, local rye bourbon and beer. Thanks!” And Yelper Dan M. praises a house-made shot composed of rye, cinnamon, honey and lemon, saying, “Kudos for originality ... it is delicious.” [Yelp]
