Pop-Up Beer Garden Canteen Relocates to Shaw for the Summer

Neighborhood Restaurant Group has doubled the number of draft beers

Canteen is Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s version of a pop-up beer garden.

Canteen, the seasonal beer garden Neighborhood Restaurant Group erected last summer on the fringes of the West End, is migrating east this summer to Shaw, bringing with it 20 craft brews, snacks from sibling establishment Red Apron, and bourbon slushies.

The latest stop for the floating gathering place is 1923 Ninth Street NW, a location which puts it within striking distance of neighboring restaurants Glen’s Garden Market, Haikan, and Kyirisan. According to a release, NRG encourages guests planning to grab a drink at Canteen to bring in food from surrounding restaurants; the group also plans to work with local food trucks to supplement in-house dining options.

On the beverage side, NRG has doubled the beer catalog since last year, now fielding nearly two dozen specialty pours ranging from flagship brewery Bluejacket’s Forbidden Planet dry-hopped Kölsch to Upland Brewing Company’s Cursed Kettles sour ale. Bar staff has also carved out room for select ciders, as well as white and rosé wines.

Canteen is scheduled to kick off the season at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 9. It is currently projected to hang around until early August, operating from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and from noon to 8 p.m. and Sundays.
