Taco kits today
Today marks the first day of service for Tortilladora — the first solo venture of Chef Ed McIntosh (who previously worked for Matchbox Food Group among others.) The deal is: Tortilladora sends out three separate containers of food — think: one is for tortillas, another for the taco’s innards (pork, shrimp and veggie are all options), and the last container holds garnishes — for taco assemblage at home. Salsas are, of course, included. And customers can now order the taco kits through Caviar and Uber Eats.
Tap takeover
Chef Spike Mendelsohn is on the move — this Sunday, instead of manning the decks at one of his DC restaurants — he’ll be behind the bar at Atlas Brew Works. The Plate of the Union Tap Takeover is an effort to raise awareness for all the most important aspects of food policy — healthy food, clean water. The fun starts at 1pm.
Opening date alert
Eater has just gotten word that Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant — the cavernous happy hour spot — will open in Reston on August 28. This is the Chicago-based brand’s third DC-area restaurant (there’s also a spot in Annapolis.)
Falafel for all
Another Chicago transplant is headed to DC — Naf Naf Grill is currently renovating 1101 19th St. NW, reports POPVille. Naf Naf serves Middle Eastern food and is taking over the spot previously held by Protein Bar and Cosi.
