Obama-Approved, Maine-Based Ice Cream Shop Coming to DC this Fall

Say hello to Mount Desert Island Ice Cream, DC

Jade K./Yelp

Mount Desert Island Ice Cream is coming to DC this fall, opening in a neighborhood with a eerily congruent name: Mount Pleasant, reports POPVille. The blog was tipped off to the expansion thanks to the frozen sweets company’s Instagram:

Pupuseria San Miguel, the ice cream shop’s future housemate, is located at 3110 Mt. Pleasant St., NW. Mount Desert Island Ice Cream currently operates three locations — all in Maine (two in Bar Harbor, one in Portland.)

Mount Desert Island Ice Cream is a small-batch shop that has a presidential pedigree. While vacationing in Bar Harbor in 2010, President Obama stopped by Mount Desert Island Ice Cream for a bite of toasted coconut (with the former FLOTUS opting for chocolate.)

Though DC is not exactly a city that’s hurting for ice cream options — a run-down of the essential shops lists over 20 — Mount Pleasant isn’t saturated with them, making this Obama-approved a neighborhood (ice cream) void-filler.
