Coming off a month-long relocation, venerable drinking spot Off the Record is back and complete with cheeky — and arguably controversial — drink coasters parodying several headline-grabbing political leaders.
Russian president Vladimir Putin, the man some U.S. officials suspect of having meddled in the 2016 election here, is featured in the latest round of keepsake caricatures; he’s depicted as droopy eyed as he’s downing vodka next to a bear. Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is shown pouring a “Bomb” Bay gin martini, while Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg gets a nod for being just plain awesome.
There’s also a brand-new cocktail list for the fall, including the Concerto di Espresso and Putin in the Rye. Check back on Eater DC for a full menu of the fall lineup.
From August 7 to September 4, the historic Hay-Adams Room upstairs became the temporary home to Off The Record, sheltering it beneath portraits of John Hay and Henry Adams.
Staff tell Eater the short closure was simply to refresh the drink list, with no aesthetic changes made at the intimate downstairs space.
