Atlas District watering hole Driftwood Kitchen, which had most recently been running both regular and late-night happy hours in order to capture more of H Street’s bar hopping clientele, is no more.
A tipster sent Popville a picture of a farewell note tacked to the door of the suddenly shuttered establishment.
“To our neighborhood friends: Driftwood Kitchen is now closed. We want to thank you for your support,” reads the succinct sign off. The decision to bolt the doors must have happened overnight; management was still talking up a planned New Year’s Eve celebration at noon on December 31.
The neighborhood eatery debuted in late 2014, taking over the two-story, corner spot left behind by scandal-plagued, Big Easy-themed Truorleans. The opening chefs jumped ship within six months, departing to open Provision No. 14 over by U Street NW. Short-lived boozy cereal service followed that fall. Most recently, Driftwood had taken to running daily happy hour deals (5 p.m. to 8 p.m, Monday through Friday; 4 p.m. to 7 p.m, Saturday and Sunday) as well as late-night specials on weekends (10 p.m. to 1 a.m., Friday and Saturday).
Calls to Driftwood Kitchen requesting comment about the sudden closure were not returned.
