Sweet news
D.C. isn’t lacking for donut shops — but now the city is about to get its first vegan incarnation of the sweets shop, reports DCist. Donut Run, after two years of operating as a pop-up, is opening a brick-and-mortar location in the Takoma neighborhood of D.C. this spring. Donut Run’s founders, both vegan, were inspired by a late-night visit to a strip mall donut shop in Southern California. Donut Run is opening in the former space of of another vegan shop: Vegaritos, which announced its closing this week.
Booze news
For a very spooky October, head to Left Door. The bar is celebrating the cult favorite film Beetlejuice through this month, with themed decor, and themed drinks. The “Tally Me Banana” drink combines rye whiskey and pineapple rum with banana syrup and walnut bitters, sure to make any drinker get up and involuntarily dance.
Pizza
Pizza Paradiso is getting political with its pies — celebrating, as per a release, the “groundbreaking women seeking office in the November elections” with a number of themed pies. From now until November 6, the shop is crafting special themed pizzas to correspond to a women seeking office this year. A Georgia themed pizza — with peach sauce, okra, shrimp — is in tribute to gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams; the shop is giving a nod to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with a New York-style pizza, natch. Available at all four of the shop’s locations, the pies are retailing for $15 for a small, $21 for a large, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the League of Women Voters.
Coming attractions
Health-focused local chain South Block is opening a new location in Rosslyn, replacing the former Cafe Asia space, reports ARLnow. The shop should open in late spring 2019.
