The duo behind essential D.C. pizzeria Timber Pizza Company is debuting their take on another staple carb this week.
Call Your Mother, the highly anticipated “Jewish-ish” deli from Andrew Dana and 2017 Eater Young Gun Daniela Moreira opens in Park View with what Dana promises will be a “world-class bagel.” “We have lunch and dinner covered with pizza, we needed a carb for breakfast and so here we are,” he says.
The deli could only ever be “Jewish-ish,” as they describe it, because Dana is half Jewish and Moreira, who is from Argentina, isn’t Jewish at all. So while Call Your Mother will serve many items typical of a classic Jewish deli for breakfast and lunch — bagels, challah, pastrami on rye — they’ll be doing them with a twist. Chicken schnitzel will come served on challah sub rolls, and instead of latkes, Call Your Mother will have “latke fries.”
Moreira also plans to incorporate some of her Argentinian background into the deli fare, as with a pastrami empanada and a take on alfajores, the Argentinian sandwich cookies filled with dulce de leche, that swaps black and white cookies for the traditional cornstarch biscuits.
But bagels are the foundation of Call Your Mother, and Moreira and Dana spent months perfecting the recipe, including flying in bagels from Montreal and taking research trips to New York City. The end result is a combination of all the flavor and texture elements they liked best. “There’s not like one thing where you’re like ‘Oh, it has to be like this,’” Dana says. “So we took all of our favorites and said let’s make a new type of thing.” And even ahead of opening, the Call Your Mother bagel is a hit — it’s been selling out at the Dupont Circle, Silver Spring, and USDA farmers markets throughout the summer.
Call Your Mother will offer the daytime carb alternative to Timber’s evening option, but eventually the deli will serve dinner as well. Dana says they plan to launch a supper club a few nights a week with themes ranging from fried chicken to Peking duck. “It’ll be a fun thing for the neighborhood,” Dana says. “It should be good.”
Call Your Mother brings bagels and more to Park View from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the weekends. Take a look around.
