Navy Yard restaurant Osteria Morini is moving the party closer to the southeast waterfront on weekends next month via a new Italian-themed offshoot featuring frozen cocktails, imported wine, and gelato sandwiches.
Located on the wooden boardwalk alongside the Anacostia River, Morini Piccolo aims to replicate waterfront dining spots found in Italy’s scenic Emilia Romagna region. The satellite food and drink stand, outfitted with striped umbrella-clad tables, will hold a preview weekend on Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24, with an official opening scheduled for Friday, April 6.
Customers can expect to find frozen Negronis, draft wines from northern Italy, and rotating draft beers from the carry-out friendly operation. Featured sweets include gelato ice cream sandwiches, fried bread, and tiramisu. There’s also ciabatta sandwiches, salads, and cured meats like soppresata and salame and cheeses sliced to order.
Piccolo is projected to operate from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Fridays, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (or until Washington Nationals games end) on Saturdays and Sundays, and during Nationals’ home games.
It’s not the first restaurant at Yards Park to capitalize on prime waterfront views; Last spring neighboring Whaley’s debuted its airy and tropical Rose Garden. The area scored a permanent riverfront drinking spot last summer when District Winery took up residence.
